Conversion is not the result of moral reform or human effort to behave better. Nor is it a decision to “accept Christ.” We abhor the practices of “decisionism,” a philosophy that affirms that a sinner is born again by making a decision to accept the truth about Christ intellectually or in a moment of emotional feelings. Biblically, regeneration is not effected in a person by a decision he makes; it is a miracle of God’s supernatural power that breathes new life into those who were dead in trespasses and sins. The new birth results in a radical transformation of the whole person, in such a way that a new creature is made by the creative power of God. Repentance and faith will always be at work, instantly and continuously, in the hearts and in the lives of all who are regenerated by the Spirit of God. The preaching of repentance in the name of Christ for the remission of sins is an essential element of the biblical gospel message. Without repentance from sin, there is no salvation from sin. It is a very serious mistake to emphasize faith for the denial of repentance since both are essential aspects of conversion. It is the church’s duty to emphasize the nature of true conversion often in its proclamation of God’s Word.
